TIPS

TIPS is the abbreviation for Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt.  TIPS is usually used in cases of ascites, when a pharmaceutical therapy does not work any more, for varicose vein inside the oesophagus, that can not be treated endoscopicly. Dr. Buggisch implants TIPS in the radiological clinic of the UKE. Dr. Buggisch has established the method of TIPS at the UKE in 1992 and has implanted hundreds of them since then.  Therefore the ifi-Institute and the UKE are cooperating closely.
